Proof that SEO can Work for You!

Name your images descriptively!

One of the basic, but most often ignored SEO techniques is to title photos and graphics with a filename that effectively describes the image.  You can invest hours tweaking META tags or wordsmithing content to make the best use of keywords, but few tactics are more important than properly naming images.

The screenshot below shows the results of a Google search for the term “totem poles“, and displays images of totem poles above the organic web results.

Search for "totem poles"

Take note of the cursor (hand) hovering on the first photo – and you can see that the web address of the domain where the photo is located.  The image and the domain name make use of the words “totem pole”.  This is an example of good (White Hat) SEO where the website’s subject matter is enhanced by using the most important keywords.

When a search engine spider visits this page and indexes the content (text) on the page, the filenames of the images, the “ALT Tags” of the images, the domain name and other factors, it knows precisely what this page is about.

Undoubtedly, the topic of totem poles is a tiny niche compared to most business products, but this example clearly demonstrates how it is possible to achieve page one of Google Results 1 – 10 of about 797,000 for totem poles.

Your company most likely has considerably more competition than this example, but fine-tuning your web pages with proven SEO methods such as renaming images will help to lift your site higher in the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages).  When you combine such tactics with local search optimization, the competitive landscape shrinks considerably.

“White Hat” SEO works!
