SEO – Who can you trust?

by Zoomeister on December 5, 2009

seo_expertsIf you own a website, chances are you have received phone calls and numerous unsolicited emails from self-proclaimed ‘SEO Specialists’.

These ‘experts’ often make some extraordinary claims about what they can do for your website and some promise guarantees that are meant to assure you of their expertise.

As consumers, one problem we have here is that there are no college degrees for Search Engine Optimization and few ways to determine if someone is actually capable of delivering what they promise.  This doesn’t mean that all SEO companies are inept or can’t deliver on their proposals.  The question is… “How do you know who you can trust?”

If an SEO company is good at what they do they will have no problem showing you websites they have optimized and you can do the keyword searches yourself to see if they can deliver. If a company balks at providing such proof for any reason, they do not belong on your short list.

As an example, I own a website about Flathead Lake in Montana, and it does not even have a common domain extension (i.e. com, net, us, etc.) – it is called FlatheadLake.name.  This website is about the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi, which is a popular tourist destination.  As of this writing, if you were to do a Google search on “flathead lake“, this domain will appear on page 1 in the top positions.  It is a well optimized website that performs well in its niche… the goal of any website SEO project.

Bottom line… the best litmus test is to ask your SEO company for some examples of sites they have optimized.  The proof is in the SERPS.
